Our Story

Our Vibrant Retirement Community

We take great pride in announcing that Meadowood marked its 35th Anniversary in 2023. We have achieved this milestone through the ongoing commitment and collaboration between our residents, staff and our Board. Our vision formed in 1982, our groundbreaking was in 1986 and our doors opened in 1988. Along the way, Meadowood has grown into a vibrant campus and community and changed lives for the better with our focus on the individual, their wellness and their happiness.

Located in Worcester Township, PA, Meadowood is a nonprofit retirement community where residents have the freedom to create their own lifestyle. Our Life Plan Community, or Continuing Care Retirement Community (aka CCRC), is located on a naturally beautiful, 135-acre campus. At Meadowood you’ll find an impressive range of services and amenities, several residential home designs and a continuum of flexible healthcare services.

Our History

The vision for Meadowood began in 1982, when Bill and Sylvia Strasburg formed a nonprofit board to create a retirement community on the property of Malcolm and Blanche Schweiker, parents of former senator and U.S. Cabinet member Richard Schweiker.

Meadowood was founded on a three-legged stool philosophy, which means that our residents, board and staff all play an important role in making decisions that shape and enrich our community. Barbara Fritzinger, Vice President, Human Resources & Organization Development, says this philosophy is what differentiates Meadowood from other retirement communities: “Residents, board and staff work together and have an equal voice about what happens at Meadowood.”

Since opening our doors in 1988, we have worked to create one of the region’s finest Life Plan Communities. We’ve enhanced our campus with an expanded weight training room, a cool-water lap pool, a central wellness courtyard and expanded rehabilitation facilities. In response to community needs, we opened Meadowood At Home, an all-inclusive plan to help active, independent seniors age successfully at home.  And The Grove, light-filled, open-plan residences with corner views of our park-like campus.

None of these new enhancements would be possible without the support of our volunteers and donors, who have given so generously of their time, talents and funds to support the Meadowood community.

Those interested in exploring life at Meadowood can experience our active, engaging lifestyle by joining the Meadowood Club, and get answers to their questions about life at Meadowood in our FAQ. We also want to do everything we can to help residents of Meadowood and the greater community live their best lives, so we’ve compiled a list of helpful resources.
